Is brown discharge a sign of pregnancy

Is brown discharge a sign of pregnancy? I wanted to know because my period is almost 5 days early instead of late, but it is not the normal color. I have read that some women experience implantation bleeding when they become pregnant but the color is always listed as bright red or light pinkish.
So if my vaginal discharge is darker in color, but still not an official "flow" like my regular cycle, could I be pregnant? I would love it if I was. I hadn't been actively trying, but I am 35 years old now and I did want to have a baby before I turned 40. If I'm not though, what could be causing this irregular spotting?
