Are cramps a sign of pregnancy before your period is missed? If you wanted to know if it is possible for cramping to be one of the early symptoms of being pregnant, then the answer is yes.

What is the cause of these period-like cramps before your cycle is due? In order to get pregnant a woman has to release an egg. That egg must be fertilized by the male sperm. Once the egg is fertilized it travels down the fallopian tube and in to the uterus. The uterus is where the fertilize egg must attach itself in order to continue growing and developing in to a fetus. This embedding is called implantation.

As this implantation process is taking place, the embryo (fertilized egg) is burrowing itself into your blood-rich, thick uterine lining. This can cause cramping, bleeding, spotting. The color of this blood is usually lighter than your normal cycle. It may be pinkish in color, or you may only notice the spotting when you wipe after going to the bathroom. Some women do not experience any of these things in early pregnancy. Every body and every pregnancy is different, so it really depends.

After implantation occurs and the fertilized egg is firmly tucked in, for lack of a better word, that is when your body starts producing the pregnancy hormone HCG. Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (HCG) is only produced by your body when you are pregnant. This hormone is responsible for giving you that positive result if you are using a home pregnancy test. Your HCG level doubles every two to three days in the first weeks of pregnancy. So it is possible to get a false negative if you test too early or if you have a hormonal imbalance already.

So to answer your question, are cramps a sign of pregnancy, the answer is they could very well be. If this cramping is accompanied by other symptoms of being pregnant, such as implantation bleeding, sore or tender breasts, a missed period, nausea, extreme tiredness, headaches/dizziness, mood swings, or an elevated basal body temperature, you may be starting your pregnancy weeks.
