Birth 29 weeks in gestation

by Margaret

Can a baby live if birth at 29 weeks in to pregnancy happens? I am currently 29 weeks and 5 days but I am feeling very funny. I think I lost my mucus plug this morning and they say that after that happens then birth is right around the corner. Is there a way to stop or prolong the amount of time that you remain pregnant once you start experiencing the early signs of labor?

This is my first baby and I am really scared. I am not having contractions yet but I do feel extra tired and uncomfortable right now. My doctor told me to call him if I think my water has broken or I start having contraction consistently. I have my fingers crossed.

Your baby has a good chance at surviving
by: Tina

Your baby has a good chance at surviving if you give birth at 29 weeks. Your child may have some physical therapy or occupational therapy needs. They will most likely stay in the NICU (neonatal intensive care unit) for quite a few weeks, but they should make it. You are at an advantage if you end up at the right hospital. I had my kids at Holy Cross Hospital in Silver Spring, MD. My twins were only 6 weeks early but there was a little girl in there born at 26 weeks! I was only there for fifteen days but when I left her daughter was doing well and they were very hopeful that she wuld continue to thrive.

Hopefully you are able to hold out a little while longer, but if you do have some more preterm labor signs you should contact your doctor or go to the hospital as soon as possible. Good luck.
