4 Weeks Pregnant - Early Signs of Pregnancy

At 4 weeks pregnant many women start experiencing some of the early signs of pregnancy. According to the gestational age calculator for pregnancy this would be four weeks from the first day of your last menstrual period. It sounds a little confusing, but this would be the week that your menstrual period is due if you have a normal 28 day cycle. So what is going on in your body right now?

What does baby look like

This is the week that implantation occurs, or has already occurred in most women. That is when the fertilized egg, or zygote, embeds itself in the lining of your uterus. By the 4th week of pregnancy the fertilized egg is referred to as a blastocyst, it has developed in to a small cluster of about 70-100 cells. To draw a picture in your mind, think about a little nerf sponge ball being stuck to a velcro wall. From this point its cells will continue to divide, develop, and grow in to the fetus.

Some of the common early signs of pregnancy during week 4 are; implantation bleeding, frequent urination, heightened sense of smell, nausea, swollen or tender breasts, darkening of the areola.

When you are 4 weeks pregnant in your gestational age, the age of the fetus is actually 2 weeks. That would be two weeks from the day of conception (when the sperm fertilized the egg). The little embryo is still quite small at this point. The size varies from about .014 - .04 of an inch, or .36mm - 1mm in length. To give you a visual, a single grain of sugar is 1 millimeter.

You probably haven't gained any weight as of yet but pregnant women do need to gain enough weight to produce a healthy baby. How much weight should you gain during pregnancy? It is recommended for those women who are currently in the normal weight category to gain between 25-35 pounds, those who are already overweight to gain 11-20 pounds, and those who are underweight at the time of conception to gain between 30 and 40 pounds during pregnancy. Remember these are just suggestions to ensure that you have a healthy pregnancy with the least amount of complications possible.
