2 Weeks Pregnant - When does ovulation occur?

Are you 2 weeks pregnant right now? When trying to have a baby, when does ovulation occur for most women? And once you have conceived, how long does implantation take?

If you are using the gestational age to chart your pregnancy, which is what most doctors use, then the average pregnancy takes 40 weeks. It starts on the first day of your last menstrual period. This day also marks the beginning of the follicular phase in your body. The body of a woman goes through two phases in order for reproduction to occur. The follicular phase is when the brain releases hormones which cause the immature eggs inside the ovary to start growing. This is release from the pituitary gland is called follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH).

As the eggs mature they release estrogen. The estrogen production signals to the pituitary gland to slow down the follicle stimulating hormone. This reduction causes only one egg to become mature enough to be released during your cycle, while the others shrivel up to nothing. In cases of fraternal twins and other multiple pregnancies more than one egg reached maturity and was released and fertilized.

So back to what is happening when you are "2 weeks pregnant". Your estrogen levels keep rising. This causes two things to happen. 1) It causes the endometrium (lining of the uterus) to thicken in order to accept implantation of the fertilized egg. 2) It causes the pituitary gland to release a burst of luteinizing hormone (LH). This luteinizing hormone stimulates ovulation, where the follicle ruptures and the mature egg, along with its follicular fluid, is released onto the surface of the ovary.

Even after the egg is released the ruptured follicle keeps receiving pulses of LH. The luteinizing hormone (LH) causes the ruptured follicle to transform into a small cyst, known as the corpus luteum. The job of the corpus luteum is to produce the hormone progesterone.

Progesterone turns off the follicle stimulating and luteinizing hormones. It builds and thickens the lining of the uterus (endometrium) in order to provide nutrients to the developing embryo as well as an optimal atmosphere for implantation. And progesterone also raises the basal body temperature (BBT), thereby warming the uterus for the fertilized egg to be received.

All of this is going on before actual conception takes place. But this is what's going on when you are two weeks pregnant, going by the gestational age pregnancy chart.
