13 Weeks Pregnant - What to expect for week 13

So you are now 13 weeks pregnant. Congratulations, you have just started your 2nd trimester. Do you know what to expect during pregnancy week 13?

Right now it has been thirteen weeks from the first day of your last your last period, which is your gestation age. Most obstetricians use the gestation age because most women remember the 1st day of their last menstrual cycle more easily than trying to pinpoint the day they conceived. So when you are 13 weeks pregnant your fetus is actually 11 weeks.

How big is my baby?

How big is my baby right now? The crown-to-rump length of your baby is between 2.5-3 inches (6.5 to 7.8cm) right now. The weight is between 1/2 and 3/4 of an ounce (13 to 20g). To visualize, right now your baby is about the size of a large lemon. Right now the head of the fetus makes up about half of the crown-to-rump length of the baby, but this will change. The body will start to grow larger than the head. By birth the baby's head will only be about 1/4 (one-fourth) the size of the body.

You may have noticed some physical changes to your breasts by this point. During pregnancy, the breast increases in size and weight. This is caused by growing and developing glands and ducts which will provide your baby with nourishment if you decide to breastfeed. You may also see veins running through your breast beneath the skin. Your areolae may darken, and it is not uncommon to develop stretch marks in this area.

As your uterus continues to stretch and grow you may find the need to start wearing looser fitting clothes at this point. You may not think that you need to start wearing maternity clothes yet but you should at least start looking around. A good indicator of when you should at least start wearing a bigger size would be how your blue jeans or pants fit. If there is pressure on your lower abdomen when you sit down due to your clothing, or even when you are standing up, you should make some changes to your wardrobe. Remember, it's not about how you look wearing bigger clothes, but how comfortable you can keep yourself and the baby growing inside of you.

If you place your hand on your belly right now it is probably very firm or hard. If you apply pressure to your abdomen your baby will squirm around inside of your womb at 13 weeks pregnant. But I would not try that if I were you. Many women start to feel less exhausted at the start of the second trimester of pregnancy. You should still get as much rest as possible. As your belly grows, getting sleep and finding a comfortable position in bed becomes more difficult.
